rusty fence

Steel fencing is not as durable as iron fences and we’ll tell you why!

Iron is made when iron oxide is extracted from ores that occur in nature. The iron oxide is heated between 1,600 and 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit from a carbon source of either charcoal or coke, which is made from coal. The carbon bonds with the oxygen into a molten mix; this removes the oxygen leaving only the metallic elements. This is known as smelting. While both wrought iron and steel are made during this process, steel is not a pure at wrought iron. Before choosing a fencing material, it is important to know the differences between the two materials in order to make the best decision for your lifestyle. How to Care for Your Wrought Iron Fence

Wednesday, July 24th, 2013

If you have a wrought iron fence, you want it to look like the day it was installed. Iron is a long-lasting and durable material. Even so, it still requires maintenance from time to time. A wrought iron fence can become weathered and cracked over time leaving it looking old. Here are a few tips to keep your wrought iron fence looking as sturdy and mighty as it ever has:

  • Protect your investment – To ward off rust and weather elements, it is best to apply a protective coat of wax to your wrought iron fence. It can also be helpful to cover your fence in a tarp when it rains and if it is located near a pool, a protective sealant can be purchase that prevents it from degrading or rusting.
  • Check for loose fence posts – If you find any loose fence posts, don’t kick or bend them as it will weaken the concrete base. A drill fitted with a concrete drill bit should allow you to drill down and make a space that is big enough that you can straighten the fence post out. Then, filling it with some quick drying concrete will ensure that the post is back to the straight position it was previously in.

  • Get rid of the rust – When rust happens to your wrought iron fence, the best remedy is usually an emery cloth in addition to using a rust neutrilizer. Other solutions include sand paper. The objective is to make a smooth surface that you can repaint later. After removing the rust, spray the rust neutralizer before repainting part of your fence.

Tips on Painting a Wrought Iron Fence

Hercules Custom Iron Custom Fence

Irons fences can be beautiful as well as sturdy and long-lasting. However, repeated exposure to the elements can leave many wrought iron fences not looking as good as they could look. For this reason, many people choose to add a fresh coat of paint to their iron fence to keep it looking as good and as sturdy as it did when you first built it.

Before you start painting your fence, however, Here are a few tips on painting your wrought iron fence:

  • Scrub the fence – Using a wire brush, gently scrub the fence and try to remove all of the traces of rust. A wire wheel attachment on a cordless drill may aid in speeding up this part of the process.
  • Start sanding the fence – Get medium-grit sandpaper and start sanding your fence. The sandpaper will remove any chipped, peeling or deteriorating paint and allow a rough surface. After the sanding is finished, wipe down the fence with a clean and dry rag.
  • Cover the surrounding areas – A tarp or a drop cloth will protect any areas around the fence from primer and paint. Make sure to protect windows, stairs and any parts of your home or business that is near the fence. Also, dampen any greenery or flower beds with a light mist of water before covering them up.
  • Apply primer – Choose a made-for-metal primer that will inhibit rust from developing on your fence. These primers come in both liquid and aerosol form, with aerosol usually being the better choice if your fence has ornate designs or work. Give the primer enough time to dry, which is typically 1-3 hours.
  • Apply the paint – If you use a rust-inhibitive paint as well, only apply it after the primer has fully dries. For the aerosol version of paint, hold it at least three to four inches away from the fence to prevent dripping.

And if you need a new wrought iron fence, especially one with custom embroidery or design, contact Hercules Custom Iron!

Check Out Some of Hercules Custom Iron’s Signature Projects!

Monday, June 10th, 2013

Hercules Custom Iron has made many custom fences for clients and customers from all over. We have a few projects that we designate as our signature projects. These are projects that we consider to be good representations of our quality and our work. Here are just a few of Hercules Custom Iron signature projects:

The Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C.

HCI recently fabricated and powder coated the entire fence & gate perimeter for the Chinese Embassy in Northwest Washington, DC. We worked hand in hand with the architects and designers for the Embassy and although there was a language barrier, we were able to communicate via translators and through CAD drawings.

The project featured custom cut “monument tops”, a solid steel fence system with kickers, and the gates were extremely ornate with intricate patterns. We were proud to be selected by the Chinese Embassy as a local company capable of meeting their stringent design requirements, custom powder coated color, and strict time restraints.

Department of Treasury, Washington, D.C.

HCI removed the existing gates at the Treasury Department, installed temporary gates, and then refurbished the existing gates. We added stiffeners and fixed several broken welds, sandblasted the gates to a smooth bare metal finish, and then powder coated them black. We then mobilized to re-weld the gates in place.

Walter Reed National Medical Center

HCI recently installed eight floors of continue picketed light wall in-fill panels as well as custom welded wire frame safety rail running the entire ramp length of the parking garage. In all, HCI measured, fabricated, sandblasted, powder coated, and installed over (800) 42″ panels that were bolted in the field.

Each panel was specifically labeled with a floor and number, delivered to the jobsite, hoisted into place, and installed in the correct location utilizing a very methodical and coordinated plan of attack. HCI was successful in meeting the job’s accelerated schedule and the owner was very satisfied with the end result.
