Louvered Screening from Hercules Custom Iron

Friday, August 30th, 2013

Louvered screening offers several advantages over other types of fencing. Its design allows it to let in air, but keep out light, rain, dirt, and anything else that might try to make its way inside. This is especially useful for fencing in things like ventilation systems where the main hub is outside. Louvered screening allows you to protect the unit from the elements, and still let in the air it needs to draw.

We offer a variety of louvered screening options and designs for everything from hotels to office buildings, and double swing gates to rooftop enclosures. We fabricate and powder coat them on-site to meet your requirements and guarantee your satisfaction. Check out all of our louvered screening options today!

The Benefits of Glass Rails from Hercules Custom Iron

Friday, August 16th, 2013

Who would have thought that a custom iron company does glass rails as well? We specialize in more than just custom iron, and glass rails are just another one of our offerings designed to suit your various fencing needs. Here are some of the benefits that glass rails can provide you.

glass railing

Unobstructed View

While an ornate fence can enhance the view, some prefer a completely unobstructed view of the area beyond the fence. In this case, a glass rail works very well. We can install glass rails on balconies, exterior walkways, along staircases, and even around pools, so you can enjoy the safety provided by a railing along with the visibility provided by glass.

Safety

Railings always improve the safety of walkways, balconies and staircases. Glass rails are just as safe as any other kind of railing, whether it be aluminum, vinyl or iron. Additionally, glass rails have no open space between bars like other kinds of railings, meaning there’s no way for a leg or arm to get accidentally trapped in between the bars. This is especially useful in situations where there will be lots of children, as curiosity can get the best of them and result in body parts stuck between bars.

Cast Iron vs. Wrought Iron

Tuesday, August 6th, 2013

Cast iron, wrought iron, pig iron? There’s a lot of talk about iron, but what does it actually mean? How is cast iron different from wrought iron? And what could pig iron possibly be? Hercules Custom Iron is here to help you iron out the semantics.

cast iron

Let’s talk about how iron is made. Iron oxide is extracted from naturally occurring ores, and is then heated to temperatures of between 1,600 and 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat comes from burning a source of carbon, which can be coke (made from coal) or charcoal. The carbon bonds with the oxygen in the molten mix and removes it, leaving only the metallic elements. During this process, known as smelting, the oxide is reduced to a raw metal from which the final product can be produced.

Cast iron is made by smelting this metal at high temperatures in a liquid state. In the past, the product was poured into blocks known as pigs to cool, hence the name pig iron, which is synonymous with cast iron. Cast iron absorbs a significant amount of carbon during this process, up to 5 percent, which makes it brittle.

Wrought iron is made by smelting at lower temperatures in a semi-liquid semi-solid state and hammering off the impurities. The name “wrought” iron refers to the process of physically working the iron to remove the impurities. A benefit of smelting at lower temperatures is that the iron typically contains less than 1 percent carbon, and is therefore stronger, more malleable, and less brittle.

The Benefits of Wrought Iron Fencing

Thursday, August 1st, 2013

Wrought iron fencing has been around for a long time, and for good reason. Wrought iron fencing offers several benefits that give it an edge over other types of fencing. So if you’re considering installing a new fence in your yard, here are a few very good reasons why wrought iron is the way to go.

wrought iron fence benefits

Durability

Wrought iron is both strong and long lasting, making it a great investment for your home. Unlike wood or plastic fences which are more susceptible to wear and tear, wrought iron will last a lifetime and more. They require less maintenance than other fences as well, and some even prefer the look that comes with natural aging, which brings us to the next point.

Visual Appeal

Wrought iron conjures up images of old elegant buildings from the 19th century surrounded by an equally stately wrought iron fence. Wrought iron fences are a great way to give a classy look to your property and give it an interesting historical dynamic.

Design Options

There are many popular options for decorative wrought iron fencing, and customization is also available. From family crests to initials, there’s no shortage of options for personalization.
