What’s the Best Fence for a Basketball Court?

Friday, January 31st, 2014

Basketball courts can be designed with or without a fence, but unless you want to stop the game to retrieve errant shots, it’s a good idea to have a fence around the court. So what kind of fence makes for the best basketball court fence? Read on to find out.

Basketball Court Fence: Chain Link Fence

Chain link fence is used in tons of different applications because it’s quite simply one of the most versatile types of fencing available. In this case, chain link fence works great for basketball courts for several reasons. For one, the links are small enough to prevent the ball from going through. Chain link fences are also easily built to heights that will prevent the ball from passing over the fence and into the yard. In addition, chain link fences have a little give compared to a wood or iron fence, so if you happen to run into the fence during an especially vigorous game of pick up, the chain link fence will soften the blow. Chain link fences work great for basketball courts, and the best part is that if you don’t have a fence around your court currently, it’s easy to have one installed.

Why Are Aluminum Fences Good in Cold Climates?

Thursday, January 23rd, 2014

It’s been an exceptionally cold winter so far, with polar vortex’s and plenty of snowstorms. But if your home or business has an aluminum fence, you haven’t had to worry about the effects of this brutal winter weather on your fence. Why? Because aluminum fences are great for all climates, including the winter.

Aluminum is a non-ferric metal, meaning that it doesn’t rust. This makes it immune to the effects of snow, ice and rain, which can easily oxidize and rust ferric metals if they aren’t protected. You can install a aluminum fence on your property without having to worry about whether or not it will come out of a long winter rusted and in need of repair. For cold, harsh climates, aluminum fences are easily the best choice to make.

Here at Hercules Custom Iron, we fabricate our own aluminum in-house. This allows us to maintain the highest quality control standards and manufacture the best quality aluminum. Our full-service aluminum fabrication division also features a state of the art powder coating facility, which further bolsters the strength of our metal fences with a sealer, zinc rich primer, and a polyester finish coat that offers 8-10 mils of protection. If you’re looking for the highest quality aluminum fence, manufactured with painstaking precision, contact Hercules Custom Iron.

What’s the Best Fence for a Tennis Court?

Friday, January 17th, 2014

If there’s one place of recreation that requires a fence, it’s a tennis court. Unless you want the ball to go flying off into the distance every time you serve another ace past your opponent, you’ll likely want a fence to contain the tennis ball. So what’s the best fence for a tennis court? There’s no absolute best choice, but chain link is probably the most practical for the following reasons:

Chain Link Tennis Court Fence

Tennis balls are not terribly big, and therefore need a fence that doesn’t have large gaps in it. While an ornate iron fence might have gaps at various points, a chain link fence is consistent in size, and the gaps aren’t large enough for a ball to pass through. These gaps also allow plenty of airflow through to the court to keep you cool. Chain link fences can be built to great heights, so you won’t have to worry about the ball sailing over the fence. Finally, chain link fences are durable, and hold up well to constant exposure to the elements.

Note that in the photo below, the tennis court is surrounded by both a chain link and iron fence. However the iron fence is on top of a pre-existing wall, which serves as the barrier on one side of the court. On the other side of the court where there was no barrier in place, a chain link fences completes the enclosure.

Signature Projects: Waterfront Fence

Thursday, January 9th, 2014

Is there anything quite so picturesque as a stately railing along a waterfront? Hercules Custom Iron installed a beautiful aluminum railing along the waterfront in the Baltimore harbor along the pier. The aluminum railing was ideal for the outdoor setting as aluminum is resistant to the elements, and as a non-ferric metal it won’t rust. The railing also features decorative rings, ball caps, and was welded into place, which required exact measurements.

The project itself was carefully planned. Piers provide great access for boats, but not so much for welding trucks and field. The project was fast tracked in order to ensure the pier was protected as quickly as possible. Check out the image below for a gorgeous view of the railing and pier in the Baltimore harbor.

What are the Benefits of Glass Rail Fencing?

Thursday, January 2nd, 2014

While it isn’t always the first railing option that comes to mind, glass rail fencing is a great option when you need to install a railing.

Use it Indoors and Out

Glass rail fencing is useful for applications both inside and outside. Inside, glass railings can be put to use on stairways in airports or convention centers. Outside, glass railings can be used on balconies, decks, and around pools.

Enjoy the View

Glass’ transparency makes it great for situations where you want to preserve the view but also need a safe railing. Outside, this property of glass is especially useful. A glass railing on a balcony doesn’t tarnish the view but still provides the protection you need for a balcony.

Safety

Glass panels are strong and reinforced, making them safe and reliable for railings. In addition, because there is no space in between the panels, it prevents limbs from getting caught in the event that someone falls or trips down the stairs.
