To Repair or Replace: that is the Question?

To replace or repair

If your wrought iron fence is completely rusted, you may have to replace it!

After the months of cold, rainy, and snowy weather hitting the east coast, it is probably no wonder that your fence looks like it has seen better days. But how do you know if your fence needs to be replaced or if it can simply be repaired? Let’s take a look!

Wood Fences

While inspecting your wood fence, look for signs of rot. If you notice rot eating your wooden fence, you can simply replace the bad slats, posts, or pickets with the same type of wood. Although the color of the wood may not be the same color as the rest of your fence, you can paint it to match or paint the entire fence for a new look. If 20 percent or more of your wooden fence boards are rotted on in a state of disrepair, it is probably time to replace your entire fence.

Chain Link Fences

Chain link fences are an extremely durable fencing option but that does not mean they cannot fall into disrepair. Chain link fences can begin to rust just like any other metal fences. If the rust is limited to 10-15 percent of your fence, it is probably time to remove that section and replace it with a new one.

Wrought Iron Fences

Wrought iron fences are expensive to buy and install around your home but they have been known to last for 50 to 100 years with proper maintenance. If you start to notice rusting on your wrought iron fence, it may be worth having it treated and repaired. But putting the job off could mean the rust spreading and ruining your fence completely. To know for sure, you must assess the damage to see how bad it is as well as what type of damage it is. To take care of it, you must remove the section and carefully sand the rust away, prime it with an anti-rust paint primer and apply a new coat of paint to it in order to keep the rust from spreading.

A fence is there to help protect your home as well as to give it an aesthetic appeal. If you are worried about rot or rust ruining the integrity of your fence, then it is time to replace it with something new.
