Can You Use Bollards in a Residential Neighborhood?

You would typically associate bollards with commercial properties. But did you know you can also use bollards in residential neighborhoods?

You would typically associate bollards with commercial properties. But did you know you can also use bollards in residential neighborhoods? Here is some more information about using these security posts around your homes.

Choose Your Bollards

Once you have decided to use bollards to protect your home, you have a choice. For instance, permanent bollards give long-lasting protection that will continue for years or even decades.

Sometimes, though, that level of protection isn’t necessary for too long. In that case, homeowners can choose to install temporary security bollards for their property. These temporary bollards are removable, which means you can pick them up when you don’t need them. Collapsible bollards also exist – these fold down and allow cars and trucks to pass by.

Where to Use Them

Luckily, these posts are also incredibly versatile. You can use them almost anywhere around your house. Here are just some examples:

  • The perimeters: Bollards are most often deployed along the perimeters of a residential property. For one thing, bollards can help prevent car accidents that can damage or destroy homes and affect the occupants inside. If you have gates protecting your home, it’s a good idea to include some bollards too.
  • On the driveway: It’s tempting to race up the driveway. Driveways are another place where accidents happen because drivers aren’t paying as they come in or go out.
  • Around the garage: Backing up into the garage is difficult enough even when you have a backup camera installed in your vehicle. Using bollards can help protect the exterior of your home, so you don’t hit the building as you or other drivers pull in.
  • In the backyard: One final place to try using a bollard around your home is in the backyard. These posts aren’t as common as the other types we have already mentioned, but they can still be useful.
  • If you’re having a backyard barbecue to celebrate Labor Day or if you are planning on having other parties throughout the fall and winter, you can designate different parking areas, if your residential property is large enough to accommodate them.
  • Once put in place, these posts can help reduce the number of small accidents that can happen during your next event. If you’ve seen bollards posted in the parking lots of shopping centers or the parking garage of the local mall, then you know what these look like and what purpose they serve.
