How to Deal with Rust on your Iron Fence

Is your older iron fence starting to rust? Here are some tips on how to remove it from your wrought iron fence.

Rust is part of the natural aging process of any iron product. Frequent winterizing can help prolong it.

A wrought iron fence is a lovely addition that adds value to almost any property. This sturdy and classically attractive fencing material is a popular choice. Wrought iron is strong and tough, but it does need occasional maintenance and upkeep. One of the biggest parts of maintaining a wrought iron fence is protecting against rust and removing it when it does appear. Without proper rust removal and protection, a wrought iron fence can weaken and become unsafe. Here’s how to deal with rust on your iron fence when it happens.

Remove Rust

The first step of this process is to inspect your fence for rust, a task you should, at minimum, complete yearly when you winterize your fence (and each season is a better bet). If there are signs of rust, you will need to thoroughly and completely remove all of the oxidized metal. Try using a wire brush or a wire wheel attachment for your cordless drill. Make sure that you completely remove all evidence of rust. If the rust has caused pitting in the metal, you may want to fill that in. In that case, you should have a professional come out to inspect the safety of the fence first. Rust that has eaten into the metal could compromise the integrity of the whole structure and you may need to replace sections.

Sand And Wipe Clean

Next, sand down the surface with medium-grit sandpaper to remove any peeling or loose paint. Wipe all of the residue from the rust removal and sanding away with a clean, dry rag before continuing. If there is any residue leftover on the fence, it will keep the primer and paint from adhering completely.

Prime And Paint

Finally, once the rust is removed and the divots are filled in, you can prime and paint, a process you should do every two-to-three years. The primer that you choose must be made for metal and protect against rust. Apply it evenly and completely and then allow it to dry according to the directions. Don’t rush this process or you may not get complete protection. Once the primer has dried enough, cover the entire fence with a compatible, rust-proof paint designed for metal. Aerosol paints are often the best bet for this process as they go on consistently and easily get into the nooks and crevices of the metal, especially on iron gates.
