iron fence and cleaning

Keeping your iron fence beautiful is a matter of good maintenance.

You’ve just had a stunning, iron fence and gate installed at your home. Its ornate custom design makes your day, and you thoroughly enjoy the site of your clean, gorgeous fence every time you pull into your driveway. This beauty will last for a while on its own, but if you really want your iron fence to withstand the elements and stay beautiful for decades to come, it’s important to maintain proper and thorough care. The process isn’t too involved, and it is worth the amazing curb appeal.

Preventing Rust

In humid climates like ours, rust can take old and ruin the beauty of your iron fencing.
Constant rainstorms, pool settings, and summer humidity create the moisture that necessitates rust, but there are things you can do to protect your iron fence. If you have the foresight and the time, you should consider keeping a tarp handy and covering your fence in the event of rain. Alternatively, a wax coating or a protective sealant can be applied to repel water and create a barrier between your iron fence and the elements. These can be purchased at a hardware store. They need to be reapplied, but do a great job of preventing rust.

Add a Layer of Paint

Paint can provide an extra layer of protection to your iron fence, and it can enhance the look and curb appeal of your home. Powder coat paint is easy to apply, and comes in a wide variety of colors and textures. You can truly customize your iron fence. In addition to the aesthetic appeal, paint, like sealants and wax, creates can protect your fence from the dangers of moisture simply by creating a defense mechanism.

Clean your Iron Fence

As with any area of your home, regular cleaning will help maintain health and vibrancy. Use warm water and a bit of dish detergent to scrub down your fence, paying special attention to areas where dirt has caked on, or rust has started to build. Toothbrushes or scrub brushes are excellent for caring for these particularly dirty areas. Make sure you rinse away all of the soap, and give your fence plenty of time to dry completely. During this thorough cleaning, be sure to notice any problem areas, and take care to repair or replace them.
