Summer Fence Repair Tips

Summer Fence Repair Tips

How often do you think about fence repair?

How often do you think about fence repair? The summer is full of long, sunny days, perfect for relaxing on your porch with a good book and a cup of tea. Because of that you probably don’t want to think about home improvement projects until after the sun goes down. Even so, you should check on your fences, and if they are in need of some repairs, follow these tips.

Looking at Your Fence

Is your fence starting to look crooked? Is it leaning over when it should be straight up from the ground? Repairing your fence is relatively simple, but even so, depending on how severely it’s damaged, you may just need to replace your fence entirely.

Dealing with Warped Pickets

When the pickets of your fence are warped,  you need to get rid of them, mainly because fence repair techniques won’t work. Warped fence pickets are no longer stable, so the longer you leave them, the more likely it is your fence will collapse. When you go to install a new picket, though, you need to be careful. That’s because every picket needs to line up correctly, or else all your efforts will be in vain.

Fixing Posts

Once you have fixed the pickets of your fence, take a closer look at the posts that help support the weight of the fence. Chances are, the posts are in need of some maintenance too. Rotten posts need to be removed, but any unstable posts only need to be reset, much as you would put a broken bone into a cast. Some stakes can hold your fence up, but pouring a little concrete can make the post more secure in the long run.

Repairing Gates and Rails

Fence gates and fence rails are two other key parts of your fence. Whether it’s made of aluminum, wrought iron, vinyl, or wood, all residential and commercial fences need to have some gates to allow access and rails to make it easier to hold onto; luckily, fence repair procedures for these parts of your fence are simple. if your gate is sagging, you’ll have to adjust it by putting on new hinges. Lastly, look at the rail on your fence. If the screws securing it in place are loose, all you have to do is tighten the screws. If that isn’t enough, then it’s time to get a brand new rail.
