Tips on Painting a Wrought Iron Fence

Irons fences can be beautiful as well as sturdy and long-lasting. However, repeated exposure to the elements can leave many wrought iron fences not looking as good as they could look. For this reason, many people choose to add a fresh coat of paint to their iron fence to keep it looking as good and as sturdy as it did when you first built it.

Before you start painting your fence, however, Here are a few tips on painting your wrought iron fence:

  • Scrub the fence – Using a wire brush, gently scrub the fence and try to remove all of the traces of rust. A wire wheel attachment on a cordless drill may aid in speeding up this part of the process.
  • Start sanding the fence – Get medium-grit sandpaper and start sanding your fence. The sandpaper will remove any chipped, peeling or deteriorating paint and allow a rough surface. After the sanding is finished, wipe down the fence with a clean and dry rag.
  • Cover the surrounding areas – A tarp or a drop cloth will protect any areas around the fence from primer and paint. Make sure to protect windows, stairs and any parts of your home or business that is near the fence. Also, dampen any greenery or flower beds with a light mist of water before covering them up.
  • Apply primer – Choose a made-for-metal primer that will inhibit rust from developing on your fence. These primers come in both liquid and aerosol form, with aerosol usually being the better choice if your fence has ornate designs or work. Give the primer enough time to dry, which is typically 1-3 hours.
  • Apply the paint – If you use a rust-inhibitive paint as well, only apply it after the primer has fully dries. For the aerosol version of paint, hold it at least three to four inches away from the fence to prevent dripping.
