A quality metal handrail not only provides a safety precaution measure but can also make your property more valuable.

If you are no metal expert, browsing through the different types of metal handrails out there might feel a bit overwhelming. All handrails have the same purpose of providing a safety net to pedestrians trying not to slip and fall while walking on slick or steep surfaces. But different types of metal handrails have distinct physical properties that vary depending on their composition. Are you looking for a metal handrail that can support lots of weight and plenty of pedestrian usage? Or are you just looking for a rail that is an aesthetically pleasing enhancement to your home or commercial building? Here’s a simple guide to help you decide which type of metal handrail is best for your construction project.

Aluminum

Aluminum metal railings are often the first choice of those who do not want to deal with a whole lot of long-term maintenance. Aluminum railings are usually powder coated or anodized, which allows for maximum corrosion resistance more so than most other types of railings. You will normally see aluminum railing in outdoor industrial facilities like oil rigs and chemical plants. Aluminum is also a cheaper option for those who need lots of durability and weather resistance, but little financial cost. Aluminum magnesium alloy 535 is one coating that can make aluminum as strong as iron but at a fraction of the cost.

Steel and Stainless Steel

Regular steel railings are similar to aluminum, but they are much heavier. Most steel railings also need regular maintenance and care to prevent rusting. This annoying problem led to the development of stainless steel, which is virtually rustproof. A stainless steel metal railing extraordinarily durable. In addition, stainless steel is anti-microbial and water-resistant, making it a wonderful type of metal railing to have in hospitals, doctor’s offices, and other medical facilities. Stainless steel railings can be placed indoors or outdoors.

Brass

A brass metal railing is extremely similar to a stainless steel railing, but one difference is the golden color. Brass is ideal if you are looking for a fancier way to dress up your building or construction project. It’s a popular choice for cruise boats, theaters, and resorts. Brass does require a bit more maintenance than stainless steel, however. Brass can become tarnished over time, but with regular maintenance, can be restored to as good as new with little effort.

Wrought Iron

Lastly, wrought iron is a classic type of metal handrail that has been around for centuries. It is a beautiful type of railing that will really make a visual impact on people. This type of railing is perfect for residential properties. Once again, wrought iron does require some anti-rust maintenance if installed outdoors. But it’s nothing a little priming and repainting every so often can’t fix.
