Installing a Gate on a Slope

Though it can be done, installing a gate on a slope is not advisable. The slope can create problems with opening and closing the gate, which could render it difficult to use. If at all possible, finding a flat area for the gate is the best bet.

However, if there’s no other good place for the gate, there are some things that can be done to accommodate the gate to the slope. Narrower gates work better on slopes because they have a smaller range of motion and are less likely to run into the ground. If the ground does interfere with the action of the gate, a little digging and landscaping in problem areas can solve the issue. A gate installed on a slope should open on the downward side of the slope so the ground doesn’t interfere.
