Make Your Wrought Iron Shine Again

Make Your Wrought Iron Shine Again

How do your current wrought iron fences look? If they’re coated with a layer of grime and rust, that may be due to all of the rain we’ve been having lately.

How do your current wrought iron fences look? If they’re coated with a layer of grime and rust, that may be due to all of the rain we’ve been having lately. Your outdoor railings and even your deck furniture might be made of wrought iron, so the problem isn’t unique to your fences. Here are some tips to follow when you need to make your wrought look brand new.

How to Start

First, you will need a wire brush that is completely dry. When you begin cleaning your wrought iron fence with this tool, you can clear off any loose rust that is already starting to peel off on its own. Once you’ve done that, pick up the paintbrush you were planning to use for repainting the fence. However, don’t dip into your chosen color of paint just yet. What you need to do instead is brush over the same rusted areas that you just touched with the wire brush. Theoretically, this can help remove larger pieces of rust from your fence.

What Comes Next

Now that you’ve removed superficial traces of rust, you’ll need to get more thorough. To do, this you’ll need some sandpaper. Little by little you’ll be removing even more rust, and the sandpaper will help. In order to make the most of the process though, you’ll need some coarse sandpaper to begin, and then follow it up with thicker sandpaper – but not the thickest you can go. Medium-thickness should be enough to do the trick.

Get Rid of Rust

Next, it’s time to get rid of all the rest of the rust on your wrought iron. Pick up some rust remover solution from the store and mix it with some water. Take the same wire brush you used earlier and then soak it with the mixture of water and solution. Use circular motions to wipe away all of the rust that you can see. Don’t hesitate to scrub as hard as you can manage – when it comes to dealing with rust, nothing is an overreaction. The smallest spots of rust that are left behind can help the rust come back later when you’re not thinking about it anymore.

Rinse and Dry

Still using the dry paintbrush, remove any last traces of rust that you can find. Then grab some steel wool to make that shine come out again. Once you’re done, rinse the entire wrought iron fence with a sponge and let it dry off before you start repainting.

Paint It Black

You don’t have to paint it black; any color will do.
