Tips for Choosing Metal Fence Color

Tips for Choosing Metal Fence Color

With so many options, how do you narrow down which color, or colors, to paint your metal fence?

Choosing the right color for your metal fence isn’t as easy as some would suggest. Unlike some say, it’s not always the best advice to just go with what feels right or to poke around a color wheel for a bit. Instead, the right metal fence color is as pragmatic as it is beautiful. If it isn’t functioning the way you need it to, it’s not doing its job. We’re all aware of the benefits of adding a metal fence to your home, but what if you want to add a touch of color as well?

Work With What You’ve Got

Think about what’s already in place. That may mean your landscape: do you really want to have to get back there and reapply paint if you’ve got vines growing around your metal fence? Beyond being a maintenance consideration, you’re also going to want to think about how you may complement your landscape instead of working against it. If your landscape is the focal point of your property, you don’t want to compete for what draws attention.

Relate it to Your Exterior

Consider what your home or commercial property currently looks like. You’ve likely got shutters, trim, or other exterior design elements that must match your metal fence in the end. Going bold if you’ve already got a more neutral color scheme could be an option, though it’s more likely that you’ll want your fence to act as an accent. The right touch of subtle color can help complement the overall appearance of your property and even help boost curb appeal.

Avoid Trends

It’s easy to get caught up in the trap of trends. We see something on Instagram or Pinterest and think, “that looks nice, I should do that too!” What works for trendy social media posts doesn’t always work for our actual needs, though. Black fences are trending these days: they’re bold, stand out, and look incredibly modern. That said, a black fence can also make a property look intimidating and draconic. The same can be said of orangish, mock-wood looks, which just don’t look great on metal much of the time.

Consider Multiple Colors

If you want something eclectic, you’re going to want to consider using multiple colors in order to create a totally unique look. A couple of accents, contrasted with a bolder primary color, can really make a metal fence look amazing.
